Experiment: Improv Curves

I’ve been playing around with improv curved blocks and having lots of fun in the process.

These block started out as the blue and yellow curves. I just love the blue, yellow, purple combinations! The improv arches were inspired by a block by Kitty Wilkin, of Night Quilter. I loved her little improv ‘V’ (Or flying birds) that she did for her Summer Loving Quilt.

I used Ricky Tims’s tutorials for sewing imrpov curves. The sewing itself is super causal: free-form cuts, no seam allowances added and very little pinning. (I only pinned when I wanted the crossing paths to match.) This definitely isn’t the method you would use with precise curves or when you are looking for a specific result. Because there is no seam allowance added, the blocks will shrink and edges don’t align perfectly. However, I find it way more relaxing and enjoyable then sewing precise curves. Also, they are SO much fun to square up. Wonky looking blocks turn into these fun little gems!
